WA.CLOTH is an eco-friendly and human-friendly material made from thread using fibers from the abaca plant. Abaca fibers have a structure similar to mitsumata, the raw material for traditional washi paper, and are long, strong, and lustrous, making them well-suited for durable products like clothing. Additionally, abaca plants grow quickly, allowing for rapid regrowth after cutting, which helps prevent deforestation and makes the material sustainable. Abaca fibers imported from regions like Asia are spun into thread using a rare, specialized machine developed by adapting washi paper manufacturing technology. The finished thread is blended with synthetic fibers according to the intended application and twisted to create a hybrid material that combines the unique characteristics of both the natural paper-like fiber and synthetic components.

- How to make paper thread -

1 The leaf sheaths of the inedible, fast-growing abaca plant are the main raw material for paper. The long fibers of the stems make them ideal for making high-quality paper.

2 The finely chopped fibers are steamed and the cellulose is extracted, among other processes, to produce high-quality paper.
3 The paper is cut into millimeter-sized pieces and turned into tape. Cutting-edge technology is used to cut the extremely thin paper evenly.
4 The cut paper is twisted. This is a delicate process as paper is difficult to stretch and breaks easily.
5 The paper thread is now complete. The finished thread is checked to ensure it is of uniform thickness and then wound onto a spool.
6 Depending on the application, it is mixed with other fibers to make yarn. It is mixed and twisted with nylon, rayon, polyester, etc. to make products.
