Concept of UNDYED: Embracing Nature's Colors and Softness
At UNDYED, we aim to celebrate the inherent colors and softness of natural materials. Our brand was born from the desire to provide a collection that allows you to experience the comfort of raw, unprocessed materials. We use unbleached fibers to enjoy their natural colors and textures, avoiding chemical dyes and minimizing unnecessary additives.
Pure and Untreated
"NATIVE COLORS OF THE NATURE"
We focus on using natural fibers in their original hues, such as the fox-colored and green varieties of cotton that were previously deemed unusable in the industry. At UNDYED, we are committed to not dyeing our fabrics with chemical dyes, allowing the raw materials' true colors to shine through. Various natural fibers exist around the world, each offering unique shades—from the ancient brown cotton that resembles a fox to the subtle green cotton. Additionally, animal fibers like wool, alpaca, and cashmere also come in a range of natural colors, including browns, whites, and blacks, resulting in deep, gentle tones in our products.
Interestingly, undyed materials tend to be softer. The use of chemical dyes can harden the texture of natural fibers, with darker colors requiring more dye and longer fixation times, resulting in a stiffer feel compared to lighter shades. Furthermore, the bleaching process often employed before dyeing strips away the natural softness, necessitating the use of fabric softeners to restore a uniform feel—though these treatments rarely match the original texture.
Water and Resource Conservation
Cotton cultivation requires substantial water resources. Choosing whether to dye or not can significantly impact water consumption. Dyeing processes often use vast amounts of water, leading to wastewater laden with chemicals that need further treatment. It is estimated that producing a single T-shirt can require 2 to 3 tons of water.
By resisting excessive treatment, we challenge conventional industry practices and prioritize comfort. Our approach minimizes chemical usage, water consumption, and energy waste, resulting in products that are not only enjoyable to wear but also environmentally friendly. While this method may not be the most efficient—acknowledging the natural variances in color and texture that can arise from differences in harvest times and locations—we believe in cherishing the inherent qualities of natural materials.
A Pioneer in Organic Cotton
The journey of UNDYED is enriched by the contributions of Sarah Fox, a biologist and entomologist who encountered ancient brown cotton. She pioneered the cultivation of colored cotton through organic methods after discovering a connection between dyeing agents and pesticides during her research. This revelation drove her to avoid dyed threads and commit to cultivating organic cotton. Her innovative farming practices include utilizing natural pest control by intercropping soybeans with cotton to create a chemical-free environment.
At UNDYED, we develop materials based on colored organic cotton varieties, such as the ancient brown cotton and the green cotton that emerged serendipitously in her fields. These colored fibers, originating from the unique California climate, enable us to highlight the softness and natural colors of our fabrics.
When you think of cotton, you might picture white fibers, which have been selectively bred for ease of dyeing. However, the original cotton species, known as brown cotton, boasts natural UV-blocking properties and resilience against pests, although its fibers were too coarse and short for spinning. Through diligent breeding, we have developed a modern version of brown cotton, complemented by the green cotton resulting from Sarah's quality improvement efforts in collaboration with Sea Island cotton.
Sarah’s work represents a commitment to developing undyed products through environmentally conscious methods. While the pursuit of efficiency and uniformity in the industry often leads to increased chemical use, we strive to honor the story of undyed fabrics, offering products with unique, deep colors and individual personalities.
A Commitment to the Future
At UNDYED, we hope you appreciate the comfort of natural materials, the beauty of deep, organic colors, and the individuality of each piece we create. By choosing our products, you support a journey towards more sustainable practices in the fashion industry, allowing us to continue weaving stories of purity and care for the environment.
